Battle – a promotional film

‘Battle is already world-famous for historic reasons as site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Battle Abbey, and home of the Gunpowder Plot. But it’s also a modern town, home town of super-group Keane and the subject of their 5th consecutive No1 album Strangeland. This feel-good film shows the town, the countryside, the events, the coast and many of the characters who run our independent businesses are also portrayed, assuring you of a very warm Battle welcome.’

This was filmed over the course of a year… quite a few trips were made during the awful summer of 2012! It got to the stage where whenever we saw the sun we made a quick dash to the town… so not that often really! Liz Honey, the producer and owner of the Saffron Gallery was beginning to think we were cursed! Local help came in very useful from Roger Bristow supply the footage from bonfire night and actress Francesca Hunt, who helped out with the voice over. I was also gratefully assisted by Toby Egekwu, an ex-student of mine.

The film is targeting a younger generation to come to Battle (if not settle down there too) and will be used at expos throughout the UK and Europe as well as on websites (10066country.com, visitbattle.co.uk,) and social networks.

Oncce again Carmen Borgonovo (fashion director at My-wardrobe.com) and Andrew Davis (Mens fashion editor at Wonderland magazine) lead you through the latest trends emanating from the catwalk down to the high street.

All filmed at Park Royal Studios. Nick Haddow photographed using 2 different set-ups, one using HMIs and the other with flash. You just have to fit in and go with the flow in these scenarios… remembering to change white balance greatly helps in post! 7D, slider & Tokina 11-16mm and EFS 17-55 used.

This PSA film was directed by Nick Haddow, the photographer. We used Nick’s Canon 5d Mk3 and my 7D. Sometimes in a multi camera set-up. Most of the footage in the film was from the 7d, the crop factor of the sensor on a 70-200mm L series lens was perfect for framing. Sound was very tricky to start with, the echo from the studio had to be combated with soft drapes and as many cushions as we could find on the floor around Toni. All audio was captured on the Zoom H4n. The film was edited by ‘Serious’ in Glasgow.

Fingers crossed it made some money!

Brian May Presents the ’40 Years of Queen’ eBook at The Groucho Club.

Last year I covered the press launch of the ’40 Years of Queen’ book written By Harry Doherty. Brian May was there with a lot of memrebilia collected during those 40 years… plus!
Last Friday I was invited again to the Groucho but this time it was to film the launch of the Ebook version.
Brian was again present and he gave a very entertaining demo of the book with Steven Carey from Carlton Books giving him some technical assistance.
Brian was both amusing and informative with stories about Patrick Moore, Gary Numan and of course Roger Taylor… the Hunter!
This was a tricky project… The Groucho is warm, friendly and sociable, but for a filmmaker it is dark and noisy! So you make the most of it and it is what it is… filmed with a 7D, radio mics (Brian kindly wore the lapel/transmitter) and a Zoom H4n. Recording Ipad content was tricky at first. I eventually was able to mirror the Ipad to my Macbook Pro (using Airserver) and record the screen using Screenflow.

Keane interview at the Brighton Centre

Lat Sunday Keane played at The Brighton Centre, a kind of ‘home’ gig for them as they come from Battle, East Sussex.

This interview by Liz Honey (Saffron Gallery, Battle) and Jane Ellis (Tourism PR and Travel Trade, 1066 Country), probed at the bands latest album (Strangeland) and the influence that 1066 country and Battle in particular had on it.

The Olive Oil Process… plain and simple!

I’m very lucky to have this little villa in Puglia, southern Italy. It is called a trullo and was derelict when I got it 7 tears ago. It is now restored and I rent it out during the summer to pay for the renovation! I have about 60 olive trees and normally the olives are just left to fall to the ground.
Luckily, on my last visit I met Domenico and his mother-in-law (I never did learn her name but she was born in 1933!) picking the olives from Louisa’s trees (behind the trullo). I invited them to take our olives and 7am the following day they were already at work!
Quickly brushing my teeth I joined them with my camera (7D with 16-55mm lens & Fader ND, tripod, slider). I did actually get my hands dirty (or stained with olive pulp!) and not just act all arty with the lens. Although I must confess filming was an escape from being made to look totally inadequate alongside the mother-in-law!

It’s easy! How to sell your car at auction.

A fun few days in Ashford, Kent. Both Roger Lightfoot and Jon Chapman of Hobbs Parker wanted a film for the home page of their car auction site to demonstrate just how easy it was to sell cars at auction.
We discussed a few ideas ideas and decided on a screenplay that told the story of HP publicist Sally Randall. She has actually sold 2 cars through HP and bought one!
Sally was great, never shouted once… a true professional. The reason behind the success of the film!

Curvette of the Year 2012

This year’s Curvette of the Year contest encouraged hundreds of inspirational entries from Curves members nationwide. Looking for women who had turned their lives around since joining Curves.
I had a pretty good day on this! Chatting to the ladies, sticking a camera in their face… getting punched on the arm! But I think it was worth it and I hope the girls do too!

Seven regional winners were selected by an esteemed panel of judges, including the Lifestyle Editor of Chat Magazine, Christine Parsons. Each of the regional winners travelled to London for a night in a luxury five-star hotel and a glamorous, all expenses paid photo shoot at Jet Studios.
From the seven regional finalists, one overall winner and two runners up were chosen to share their stories in Chat Magazine.

River Island – Holloway Road Collection with Zulu Winter

River Island have come up with a mens collection called ‘Holloway Road’ (after the London street where the Lewis family first launched a fashion store). In a casual setting the band Zulu Winter modeled the clothes whilst jamming in a Shorditch basement bar!
The band also gave us an interview and a very interesting take on their ‘Style Icons’!

McArthurGlen – Designer Outlet opening in Hamburg

McArthurGlen are opening a new Designer Outlet near Hamburg on 20th September and I was asked to create a BTS film of the advertising campaign shoot at Sunbeam Studios in London. The stills shot by Nick Haddow will be used for posters on the Hamburg underground.
